60 minute drainage responseExpress Drainage Solutions are proud of our ability to be with you wherever you are in the London area within an hour in the event of an emergency.

Just 60 minutes. With response times so quick, we ponder what else you could actually achieve in 1 hour?

The record books are full of 60 minute achievements, but as your mind may be on the cause of your emergency call-out (commercial drain clearance, blocked pipes), you may not be too keen to attempt any of the feats listed below!

Athletic Achievements in 1 Hour

Despite not being recognised at world championships or the Olympic Games, records do exist for one hour runs, bike rides and more, with some famous names holding the current titles for distance travelled within 60 minutes.

Furthest Distance by Bike in 60 minutes

Bike DistanceFormer Olympic gold medallist and Tour de France yellow jersey winner, Chris Boardman, holds the record for the longest cycle ride in a 1 hour period (in the category specifically for upright bicycles, administered by the UCI), clocking up an incredible 56.375km in Manchester’s famous Velodrome back in 1996. Boardman destroyed Tony Rominger’s previous record by over a kilometre, and his distance has remained unconquered for over 13 years now.

Furthest Distance by Foot in 60 minutes

Distance by foot in an hourOn foot, another sporting legend has the honour of furthest distance covered in 60 minutes. Double Olympic gold medallist and multi record holder in a wide range of running events, the great Haile Gabrselassie also holds this prestigious title. Completed in the Czech city of Ostrava back in 2007, Gabrselassie completed an astounding 21.285km – 2.5km more than the original attempt at the record by British man Alfred Shrubb over 100 years earlier.

The Weird and the Wonderful

It’s not just great feats of athletic achievement that earn records for one hour activities. That font of all bizarre knowledge, the Guinness Book of World Records, is full of 60 minute accomplishments that range from the impressive to the downright peculiar.

Hamburgers Assembled, Cookies Baked, Cups of Tea Made

725 cups of tea made in an hourFood and drink creation appears to be a popular field for 1 hour record attempts. The current holder of the most cocktails made is the German Matthias Knorr, who mixed a staggering 1,003 in 60 minutes in New York back in 2011, while figures for most hamburgers assembled (1053), pizzas made (837), cookies baked in a solar oven (1,225) and cups of tea made (725 – in England of course!) also sit proudly in record books.

Another example of the weird & wonderful is the record for most snowmen built in an hour. Carried out on the 18th fairway of the Mountain Dell Golf Course in Salt Lake City, the successful attempt (1,279) was performed by 350 participants, with each snowman being given 2 eyes and a carrot nose in order to meet the criteria of the record.

Endurance and Physical Achievements

Pulling A Lorry, Generating Electricity

In 2001, 20 strongmen teamed up in Wisconsin, USA, to pull an articulated lorry weighing in at 16,610kg an impressive 5.52km, while electronics company Siemens set about creating 4630 watt hours of energy by pedalling static bicycles for 60 minutes in December 2012 – enough to power a 60 watt light bulb for over 77 hours!

While many of these feats of human endurance, athletic achievement and near-lunacy might show what is possible within a 1 hour period, attempting to perform simple tasks around the home in this time is surprisingly difficult – underlining the speed and efficiency of Express Drainage Solutions’ 60 minute response time.
